CAT 2024 Analysis: The Inner Working of the Exam-Structural and Strategic Analysis

CAT 2024 has gone by and the educational community is already abuzz with discussion regarding the intricacies of its exercise. Just like last year, this year's test too was a test of intellectual depth, time management, and strategic decision-making. As India's most coveted entrance exam for MBA aspirants, CAT 2024 threw challenges at the candidates in new ways, but the core elements that have made it a benchmark for academic excellence are not compromised. Understanding the Structure of CAT 2024


CAT 2024 continued with the pattern that has almost become synonymous to it: three sections, VARC, DILR, and QA, and each section was allowed 40 minutes. Candidates could not switch sections during the test. The structure of the test remained exactly the same as last year. This structure demands a focused mental strategy and time management skills, as there is no opportunity to return to questions in one section once they have moved on to another.


The total questions that appeared in CAT this year were 66, out of which 24 appeared under the VARC category, 20 were under the DILR, and the remaining 22 were from the QA section. The total number of questions appearing in the various sections was roughly the same as last year, but the proportion of difficulty level and complexity improved this year. For example, DILR provided both easy and difficult puzzles, while VARC Reading Comprehension passages were more complex in nature, requiring higher level analytical reading.


A Closer Look at VARC in CAT 2024


The VARC section of CAT 2024 stood out for its demanding Reading Comprehension (RC) passages, which covered a wide range of subjects from social sciences to environmental concerns and abstract philosophical discussions. These passages were designed to test both reading speed and comprehension skills, with questions that required candidates to infer meaning, critically analyze arguments, and compare opposing viewpoints. Unlike previous years.


In addition to RC, the verbal ability portion of VARC featured para-jumbles and odd-sentence-out questions, which tested candidates’ grasp of grammar, sentence structure, and contextual coherence. Absence of options to answers had made para-jumble an even tougher section as there was a greater reliance on logic and sentence patterns familiarity.


The Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) Puzzle


The DILR section in CAT 2024 proved to be a defining challenge for many candidates, combining both data interpretation and logical reasoning problems.  These sets covered a range of topics, including tables, bar graphs, pie charts, and more complex puzzles such as seating arrangements and tournament-based problems. As mentioned in the CAT 2024 analysis, this year's DILR was more challenging than last year.


The DILR questions tested critical thinking, picking up data correlations, and logical reasoning in solving problems without much time. This year, the CAT included much more abstract logic puzzles where the standard techniques for traditional problem-solving did not work. Most of the aspirants found that the secret to dealing with DILR in CAT 2024 lay in sorting out the important sets that were more easily solvable and not trying complex multi-step problems which would consume time.


Quantitative Ability- QA and Its Requirements


The CAT 2024 Quantitative Ability continued to be a test of mathematical understanding and application. The questions were on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and number systems, among other areas. According to this CAT 2024 analysis, the section has a majority of its questions rooted in arithmetic, with special emphasis on topics like percentages, profit and loss, time-speed distance, and work-time problems. Algebra and number systems formed another large number of QA questions, with many questions that required a more in-depth understanding of concepts such as inequalities, quadratic equations, and logarithms. Geometry problems seemed moderately challenging and often used visual reasoning and the application of formulas to solve complex problems. The overall difficulty level of QA in CAT 2024 was a little higher than it had been in previous years. Here, the formulas were not just enough; candidates were expected to use the learned formulas under time constraints.


One of the significant pointers from this CAT 2024 analysis is that those who were strong at the basics and had extensive practice in solving time-bound questions became better equipped to handle the QA section. A lot of speed along with accuracy went up in scoring for this section as most of the questions were asked to be done in a minute or less time.


Expected Cutoffs and Percentile Predictions


Given the tough nature of CAT 2024, it is expected that the overall cutoff will resemble slightly lesser figures from previous years. Top-class institutes like the IIMs can be expected to put up high sectional as well as overall cutoffs. 99th percentile aspirants may require approximately 100–105 marks, though this could vary a bit with the normalization process.


This CAT 2024 analysis suggests that the VARC section was highly difficult and hence, the sectional cut-off may decline marginally whereas DILR and QA are likely to see cut-offs in a range. While the cutoff at more competitive IIMs would continue to be rigorous, percentiles of those would be even shaped with the normalization of scores across multiple test slots.

In QA, the aspirants should focus on building a mathematical foundation, in specific topics like arithmetic and algebra and practice under timed conditions to improve both speed and accuracy. Mock tests are still one of the most effective ways to refine these skills and improve performance on the day of the test.
